Dragon swords have default fire damage. All other weapons (except wands and staves) have upgrades that can change the base damage type to fire, cold, air or earth.

Pommels are salvaged items. Sometimes when you ID a rare item, you'll see a message about a certain item being unlocked, ie bowstring, pommel, etc. When you use an expert salvage kit on that item, there's a chance that you'll salvage the upgrade.

You can't buy them from the NPCs, however you might be able to trade with someone in game for it.

I got quite annoyed at this "chance". Many times during Riverside runs I have unlocked nice weapon bonuses...only to use expert salvage and got me some crap common material.

"You have unlocked Zealous bow string!"
*expert salvage*
Salvage of rare bow results in 8 wood planks.

ya, I salvaged a major swordsmanship zealot's armor, gave me 7 wood planks. Was I angry.

but yeah, what's up with the drops though? Hilts used to be all over the place, while pommels were very hard to find. This time around, pommels everywhere, but all beta I got my hands on two hilts (Icy and Vampiric)

Please explain this to me. I got something like that too. Some skill was unlocked, but the piece wasn't equip-able or anything yet. So I tried salvaging it, and it turned into craft materials.

If you are successfull with an expert salvage kit, will that piece turn into something use-able?

unlocking only applies to your PvP-only characters. even if you identify an upgrade component, there is a chance that you may not get it when using an expert salvage kit. if you do get it, you can use it to upgrade something else or sell/trade it.

One question I have been wondering about all this unlocking business. How do you know if an item has the chance of unlocking something. I know I've never actually seen one of these messages like "You unlocked something 1337". Are there only certian items that can salvage for something like that?
Also, while on the business of talking about items, what do the colors signify in their name. I've seen some items with a light blue, and one item with a purple color to their name.

Incase you couldn't understand Justin m (Hell, I know I couldn't), I hope this helps. Almost all items are salvagable. Quest items, beginner gear, and stuff of most importance can not be salvaged. 90% of the stuff you will find off of mobs, or monsters, will be salvagable. Sometimes you will know what you will get when you salvage. For example, salvaging a bow would give you wood planks, while salvaging a skull will give you bone. Now, if an item says "Unidentified" in blue when you put your mouse over it, then you can use an Identification kit on it, and you will "unlock" its hidden potiental. Sometimes you will get an item that is "Highly Salvagable", which means when you salvage it, you will get a greater excess of items from it then you would if it were a normal item. For example, a highly salvagable bow might give you 13 wood planks, while a regular bow would give you 1 or 2.

I plan on making a crafting, salvaging, and identification guide/list as soon as I can get the time. I know a lot of people were clueless standing in Old Ascalon, and learning it for myself was a hasel. Well, I hoped that helped!

I beg you to type the words and not use chat speak, it is really hard to tell what you mean sometimes. The admins frown on that here too and will delete the post if it's really tough to read. Just letting you know Jusin_m.

I was wondering about the "Item Unlocked" messages myself when I first found some of these items yesterday, so I poped in here today to do a search, and I found a few threads about the Expert salvage kits and getting the item on the RP side. So I went ahead and bought one of the expert salvage kits and set about salvaging the 5 or 6 items I had in my inventory.... I got the special item from all of them. A bow handle or string (don't remember offhand) and axe shaft, and runes for various things. So, am I just really lucky or did they change the way it works recently?
